Researchers at Berkeley recently did a study involving adults who were seeking mental health counseling. They had one group write a letter of gratitude to someone once a week for three weeks, and another group had to write about their thoughts and feelings of negative experiences. The third group did no writing at all (all three groups received counseling services.)
The researchers found that, “those who wrote gratitude letters reported significantly better mental health four weeks and twelve weeks after their writing exercise ended.”
It’s been proven over and over again that gratitude makes you happier and healthier. Pretty incredible right??
On those tough days, practicing gratitude is definitely easier said than done though. It can be pretty hard to find things to be grateful for when things just aren’t going our way.
But it’s on those hard days that practicing gratitude is more important than ever. There’s no better way to turn around a bad day or a negative attitude than finding something to give thanks for.
So what are some practical ways you can practice gratitude every single day? Let’s dive in!

A Daily Gratitude Journal
Even if you’re not a huge “journal-er”, taking the time to write down a few things you’re grateful for every day is probably the number one way to practice gratitude.
You can simply open up a blank notebook and jot down one to three good things that happened that day, people you’re thinking about, or the fact that you got to see one more day.
To make journaling even more enticing, and turn this into a true habit, pick up a daily gratitude journal. You’ll have a beautiful spot to come to every day where all you have to do is fill in the blanks. Plus, writing in a daily gratitude journal is a great way to start your morning routine. And you’ll have an awesome keepsake to look back on and remind you of so many precious memories in the future!
Talk to a Friend
If you’re more of a “process out loud” type of person, share those things you’re grateful for every day with your best friend, mom, or sister.
They’ll be encouraged by your positive attitude and it can help them think about what they’re grateful for too.
It’s a win-win for both of you!
This can be as simple as shooting a quick text message, or calling them on your way home from work. Whatever feels the best to you and fills you up more!
In a way, this is the same as talking to a friend. Only this time, you’re talking to God. Prayer is a great way to practice gratitude because you’re thanking the One who has made it all possible!
Prayer is also great because you can do it any time of the day, whether you’re at work, driving, or hanging out with your kids. Sending up a quick message of thanks is easy and a nice break from your day-to-day demands.
Get Your Family Involved
Instead of venting to your spouse about everything that’s gone crazy that day, why not start with sharing what you’ve been grateful for that day instead?
Start with a few things you’re grateful for, then ask him to share his for the day too. This is a great way to keep (or put) the both of you in a great mood for the rest of your evening time.
If you’ve got kids, ask them what they’re thankful for as well. You’ll probably get some pretty funny answers from time to time, which makes it even better!
Share on Social Media
You probably won’t want to share everything on social media, and that’s more than OK. But every now and then, pick one of the things you’re grateful for, and share on Facebook or Instagram. You can post a pretty picture, a meaningful quote, or a full story that will encourage others.
Sometimes we let social media steal our joy and make us jealous of other’s lives. Stop those negative thoughts from taking over by sharing what you’re grateful for instead of thinking about what you don’t have.
Who knows, you may even start a chain reaction!
