Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to find buried treasure? To search all the dotted lines on a treasure map until you find that “X” at the end? If your childhood was anything like mine, you may have often pretended you were a detective or a spy, and you probably daydreamed about getting a metal detector for your birthday. If any of that sounds like you, I’ve got your next big date night idea – geocaching!
Geocaching is basically a scavenger hunt on steroids. Instead of a treasure map, you have an app with a built in GPS. Instead of finding a chest full of gold doubloons, you find a myriad of random goodies such as puzzle pieces, souvenirs, and coins. Geocaches are hunted all around the globe by tons of adventurers every single day.
The name of the game is basically this – you download the geocaching app, search for geocaches near you (you may be surprised at the amount people have already hidden), pick which one you want to hunt for, then follow your GPS until you find it. The GPS seriously puts you within feet of the hidden container! You can narrow your search by difficulty levels, size of the geocache containers, and location. When you find the geocache, there is a logbook inside for you to sign your name and date it. It’s pretty amazing to look back and see how many people have found this treasure before you! Then you can take one of the nick-knacks inside the container to keep, as long as you replace it with something in return. Be sure to re-hide the container in the same spot you found it, to keep it fun and fair for future explorers.
I absolutely loved the rush I felt when searching for my first geocache! It was a little cold and slightly rainy outside, but I wouldn’t let that stop me. My husband probably thought I was a tad bit crazy ;). The first geocache we found was pretty easy; we were able to locate it within the first few minutes of searching. The second one, not so much. We looked and looked, but it was hidden so well that we had to give up when the rain started to pick up a bit. I am still determined to go back and find it!
Geocaching is super easy (and free!) to get started, which makes it even better. For more info, you can visit the website here. They have lots of great videos and articles on how to get started and links to download the app too.
If you’re looking for something out of the norm to do with your spouse on your next date (or with your friends, family, or for some good alone time), consider geocaching. This global treasure hunt is perfect for all you explorers out there. Get the app, get outside, and get searching!
