I whole-heartedly believe it is so much better to give than it is to receive. One of my favorite things to do is surprise people with little treats and gifts, whether they’ve been having a rough time lately, or for no reason at all. I know when someone does any little kindness for me, I dwell on it for the rest of the day (or longer) and it makes me know that I am loved, and that there are still kind people out there. I like to spread this feeling whenever I can.
Send Fun Mail
One of my favorite ways to spread joy is by sending “fun mail”. I got the idea recently while I was out shopping for some new sheets for my bed. I happened to notice something that I knew my best friend would absolutely love. I thought about saving it for a Christmas gift, but then I thought about how fun it is to receive packages in the mail. Has anyone noticed all the subscription boxes popping up lately? You can subscribe to makeup boxes, book club boxes, snack boxes…pretty much anything you can think of, you can get a nice little package in the mail every month.
Fun mail is simply that, sending a little fun to someone in order to brighten up their day. Next time you’re out shopping for yourself, look for something that you could gift to someone else too. This does not have to be expensive, and I definitely encourage you to not spend money that you don’t have. It simply has to be thoughtful, a way for the person to know that you were thinking of them.
Write a Note
I would also recommend putting a little hand-written note in the package. I went online and created a postcard that said “Fun Mail” with a cute little koala (why a koala? I don’t know, it was just cute!) on it. On the backside is where I could leave a message saying how much I cared about that person, why I thought to send them the gift, etc. Leaving a note gives them the joy of receiving a package and a letter in the mail all at once.
Don’t Forget the Packaging
A way to make your gift even more fun is to take care in packaging it. Wrap it up in pretty tissue paper and throw some confetti in there. Put stickers all over the box. Do something a little extra to give them even more fun when unwrapping their gift.
Bonus points if you actually get it in the mail that day! Don’t be like me and let your gift sit for weeks before you make it to the post office. 🙂
Fun mail is one small way of spreading joy to the people you care about. It is often the little things that matter the most to people, and surprising someone you love with something in their mailbox is one little way to make someone’s day.
I encourage you to do this for your best friend, mom, cousin, pen pal, or the first person that jumps to your mind. Pick up a little something for them next time you’re shopping, wrap it up in some cute packaging, and put a handwritten note in there with it. Send it on its way and in a few days you’ll be making someone’s day (and in return, your own.)
