One of the best things I ever did for myself was starting this blog. It’s given me a way to earn extra money, meet so many new people, and grow my personal development like crazy. I want all those things for you too!
The best part about starting a blog is it’s easy and inexpensive. Blogging can also give you a creative outlet if you love writing, and if your goal is to quit your job to stay home, it can keep you connected to the outside world (and you’ll soon see how just big and small the blogging universe is all at the same time!)

This post is going to walk you through starting your very own blog, step-by-step. I’ve included screenshots to make it even easier! So let’s get started. The first thing you have to decide is:
Step 1: Naming Your Blog
One of the coolest things (I think) about starting a blog is getting to have your very own web address. Mine is www.fulfilledforless.com. You get to have your very own spot on the Internet!
It’s not always easy picking a blog name, however. I remember having a whole notebook page full of ideas before finally settling on mine. I recommend brainstorming some words and phrases you like to get started. What do you want to write about? If you love personal finance like me, your list could look like:
- Debt Free
Etc. The possibilities are limitless! Another common way to go is to use your name as your website. CarolineVencil.com, NatalieBacon.com, and JessiFearon.com are a few that do this. So if you absolutely cannot come up with a spunky website name, consider just using your own name.

Step 2: Sign Up for Hosting
Hosting is basically where your blog lives on the Internet. I recommend a hosting company called Siteground for all new bloggers. To have your own domain name, web hosting is not free. But don’t worry, it’s not expensive! You can get your very own domain name (website), hosting, and site privacy for about $75 for the whole year!
You might be wondering, why not just sign up for a free blog like on Blogger or Blogspot? Well for one, you won’t get your very own fancy domain name. It would be something like www.fulfilledforless.blogspot.com. Not as cool! And because those aren’t considered professional blogs, you will have a very hard time making any money with them if that’s one of your blogging goals.
Trust me and sign up with Siteground from the start!
It will take you to this page:
All you need to get started is the StartUp plan (the one on the left.) While you’re in the beginning stage and growing your blog, this is all you’ll need. You can choose the GrowBig plan if you’d like, but it will likely take you many months, or over your first year, to get to where you need that much hosting for your pageviews.
Click “Get Started” and let’s go!
Next is where you’ll enter in your domain name, the name you picked in step one. Simple type it in the box and click “proceed.”
If the name you picked is available, it will take you to this screen:
(I chose picklesarefun as a quick example — pregnancy cravings??)
Next, just enter in all of your information, then scroll down.
I HIGHLY recommend you check the Domain Privacy box (which I’ve terribly circled in the screenshot above.) For $1 a month you can protect your personal information and save yourself from tons of telemarketing and spam calls/emails.
And that’s it! Confirm the terms and conditions and click “Pay Now.” You pay the whole year up front so you don’t have to worry about it coming out monthly.
Step 3: Connect WordPress
Now, this is as far as I can go on the screenshots without actually buying picklesarefun.com (as great as that sounds, one blog is enough for me.)
The good part is, Siteground will walk you through how to set your blog up through their quick and easy “Click-and-Install WordPress” feature. WordPress is the platform where you’ll go to manage your site and write your blog posts.
One of the best features of Siteground is their customer support, so if you get hung up on this at all just chat with their support team and they’ll get you all squared up!
Step 4: Log in and Get Started!
The next thing you’ll get to do is choose your theme. Your theme is what makes your site look the way it does. There are tons of free themes so don’t worry about spending more money just yet! In fact, I recommend you hold off on buying a paid-for theme or hiring a graphic designer until you are comfortable with blogging and have a good idea of what you want to focus your writing on.
If you want to browse some paid themes for the fun of it, the company I currently use for my theme is Restored316. They’ve got so many beautiful themes you can choose from!
And that’s it — Your Very Own Blog!
I’m SO excited for you to get started on your own blogging journey! There’s so much more to learn and do, but now you’ve got your foundation set. Here’s what I recommend you do next:
